The exhibition design was conceived to reflect the explorative intention of the ‘Duos en Résonances’ project, allowing not only to show the results of each single project but foremost the gestures and interests, trials and failures, dreams and realities. The exhibition was consequently designed to offer a modular system enabling the showcasing of a variety of expressions, research and object typologies in a coherent landscape. The modularity of the scenography enables the structure to be adapted and re-used time and again.

The 2024 edition of Duos en Résonances continues to build on the modular display system first introduced in 2021 by Studio Plastique. This versatile shelving system is adapted to suit the unique needs of each new edition, ensuring flexibility while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic. For this year’s exhibition, the design incorporates materials from previous MAD exhibitions, reinforcing the concept of sustainable reuse.

The exhibition is conceived as a dynamic, evolving space—partially reconstructing the workshops of the featured craftsmen using their actual tools and equipment. Live workshops invite visitors to engage directly with the craft process, allowing them to contribute to the exhibition. After the workshops, the ongoing work remains on display as a lasting testament to the craftsmen’s creative presence.

At a time of widespread desire to re-implant traditional skills at local levels, we paradoxically observe the disappearance of many of them. This phenomenon can be attributed to a lack of interest, at times for the material, at other times for the production process or for the particular craft trade, explained by changing habits and lifestyles but also by the lack of transmission of knowledge or training.

At the heart of these challenges, design can certainly play a role in promoting techniques, materials, applications… Through its openness to the world, it represents a real asset for questioning the evolution of craft professions and encouraging the emergence of new ideas, new applications or even new commercial and creative strategies.

Eliciting this fruitful dialogue between design and craftsmanship, this is the objective of the ‘Duos en Résonances’ project, designed to encourage experimentation around rare craft skills and strengthen the sharing of experience between creative professions.

Following a call for applications, craft artists and designers were invited to meet, get acquainted and develop common projects. This exhibition presents the results of the research carried out by the five craft artist-designer pairs selected in 2022.

At the heart of the creative process, collaborative, experimental approaches stimulate an openness to new perspectives.
